March 2019 : Exeter DLitt (1955-86)

Exeter DLitt
Institution : The University of Exeter

Award : Doctor of Letters (DLitt)

Description : Scarlet cloth, lined dove grey, bound on all edges with kingfisher blue silk.

Shape : Cambridge [f1]

The Exeter scheme of hoods is copied from that of Cambridge, but using dove grey cloth in place of black: the bachelors hoods are (more or less) the fur-less 'wartime' Cambridge BA, with the masters and PhD hoods likewise copies of the Cambridge MA and PhD. The hoods of higher doctors are an exception and have a dove grey lining with a faculty border.

In 1986, separate faculty colours at Exeter were abolished, all being replaced with spectrum blue. The illustrated example is bound with kingfisher blue, the former colour of the faculty of arts, also used for Doctors of Letters (DLitt), Music (DMus) and Divinity (DD).

While the Exeter PhD hood is lined with scarlet cloth, as per the Cambridge PhD hood, there is a question as to whether the Exeter higher doctors hood should also be lined with cloth. Both Shaw and Smith & Sheard say that it should. Haycraft, on the other hand, says that it should be lined with silk (illustrated). The University regulations themselves are silent on the matter.
