August 2016 : Glasgow MA (pre-1893)

Glasgow MA
Institution : The University of Glasgow

Award : Master of Arts (MA)

Description : Black silk or stuff, lined and bound ¼" purple silk.

Shape : Oxford simple [s1] (1868-1893), Glasgow [f9] (1893-present)

Glasgow reintroduced hoods in 1868, and they were all made in the Oxford simple shape [s1]. In 1893, they were changed to the version of the Cambridge shape still in use [f9], and this simple shape MA is a rare survival, and is in the Society's collection. It came in a bequest from Alan Tait.
