October 2016 : Bowdoin/Smith College PhD/DD

Bowdoin/Smith PhD/DD
Institution : Bowdoin College or Smith College

Award : Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Divinity (DD)

Description : Black, lined and the cape bound white, the cowl bound inside ½" and bordered outside 5" dark blue, 1½" scarlet velvet.

Shape : American Intercollegiate Code (AIC) doctors [f14]

This rare US doctoral hood, c. 1890s-1920s, possibly from Bowdoin College or Smith College, shows a split border representing the PhD (dark blue) and DD (scarlet). The practice of showing more than one degree on a hood was prohibited by 1935 in the Academic Costume Code. Further details can be found in the article by Kenneth L. Suit, Jr., 'The Iridescent Web: American Degree Colours (1895-1935)', in the newly published Transactions of the Burgon Society, 15 (2015), copies of which will be sent to all subscribing fellows and members.
