February 2017 : University of Malta PhD

Malta PhD
Institution : University of Malta

Award : Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Description : Black silk, lined white on the left side and red on the right, piped on all edges with gold cord.

Shape : Durham doctors [f4]

The degree of PhD was introduced at Malta in 1975, and graduates wore a plain black gown only. In 2008, the University held a competition to design robes for the degree, which was won by Dr Nicholas Groves, FBS. The hood uses a Durham full shape, reflecting the shape already in use for other degrees, and lined with red and white silk, based on the University's arms (and the Maltese flag). The gold piping was added to help the hood stand out against a black gown, and also marks it out as of doctoral level: masters' hoods are piped red.
