October 2017 : Simon Fraser BA (prototype)

Simon Fraser BA
Institution : Simon Fraser University, Canada

Award : Bachelor of Arts (BA) (prototype)

Description : Fraser Modern Red tartan, bordered 2" with light blue silk.

Shape : Aberdeen [a7]

This hood was one of the prototypes proposed for Simon Fraser University in Canada at its foundation in 1963. Fraser of Lovat tartan was originally proposed because Simon Fraser, after whom the University is named, was descended from the Frasers of Lovat. The tartan was changed, however, probably because the robemaker did not have any of this material available.

The design never came to fruition, as it was vetoed by the Chancellor. Instead a design was chosen which replaced the tartan with red and was bordered with the appropriate faculty colour. The hood shape remained the same.

Further details can be found in the article by John Lancaster, in the newly published Transactions of the Burgon Society, 16 (2016), copies of which will be sent to all subscribing fellows and members.
