The LSE (the London School of Economics and Political Science) was founded in 1895, and joined the federal University of London in 1900 as its Faculty of Economics. In 2007 it gained degree-awarding powers, and now awards its own degrees, though it remains part of the University. The hoods are a grade-hood system, in the LSE colours of violet, used as the shell; black, used as the lining, in watered silk; and gold, used as the binding. The difference in grade is marked by changes of shape and the amount of gold binding. The PGDip is [s2], violet, lined black watered, and the cowl bound 1" inside and ½" outside with gold.
