Membership of the Society is open to anybody who is interested in academic dress. Annual subscription entitles Members and Fellows to the following benefits:


Members receive a free copy of our annual peer-reviewed journal Transactions of the Burgon Society on publication, as well as our quarterly newsletter Burgon Notes. Members can also apply for Fellowship of the Society by examination.


Members enjoy discount ticket prices to our events. These include our annual Spring Conference and autumn Congregation. We also hold garden parties, archive open days, and visits to universities and robemakers in both the UK and North America.


Members benefit from discounts on our publications, including Shaw’s Academical Dress, when buying through our online shop. Some robemakers also offer discounts to Burgon Society members who purchase new academic dress from them.

Fellowship of the Burgon Society

Fellowship of the Burgon Society (FBS) is awarded on the basis of original work in the field of academic dress. The areas of study include design, history, and practice. Applicants need no prior qualifications, but entry is open only to members. Fellows are entitled to wear the Fellows’ Hood, vote in Society meetings, and use the post-nominals FBS.

Choose the category of membership which applies to you. You will be directed to the online Application Form and to pay the Membership Fee using PayPal.

The Society offers individual members in the UK the option of paying monthly (minimum £3). Such payments must be by Standing Order. Please complete the online membership form and then email the Secretary ( who will supply you a Standing Order Mandate.

The Society’s membership year runs from 1 October to 30 September. Membership fees are renewable on 1 October. Memberships starting more than halfway through the subscription year are allowed to run until 30 September of the following year. New members will receive the most recent edition of Transactions of the Burgon Society and the past two issues of Burgon Notes.
